Sunflower
Designed for the period: spring - autumn
Calendar: sowing April - May
The goal of the project is to grow a sunflower and then use its seeds in the winter as bird food. Children should realize how everything in nature is interconnected.
Teachers play one of the songs about Sunflowers (I. Zemánková – Tak jako slunečnice) for the children and then tell the children why sunflowers revolve around the sun, that there are plants that need to be grown in direct sunlight, while some require a shady location. The difference between annuals, perennials, …
Together, each child plants 1-2 sunflower seeds and grows their own plant. The children can plant them in a common flower bed or keep them in containers or take them home. They can compete to see who can grow the tallest, they can try growing different cultivars. After flowering, they collect the sunflower seeds, dry them and store them for the winter - then they will put them in the bird feeder and watch them.
Task for children: the sunflower is a motif of the sun, summer. What symbols could be associated with other seasons? Paint them or cut them out and make a collage.
