Grow, seed!
Designed for the period: spring - summer
Calendar: sowing February - March, harvest June - September
The aim of the project is for children to realise how long it takes and what effort, care and effort goes into the tomato or pepper they have for their snack. They should also realise the difference between a tomato they buy in the supermarket and one that has only seen the sun from afar, and how delicious a tomato ripened in the sun is. That it smells different, tastes different, looks different.
The teacher explains to the children that the seeds in the tomato and pepper can be used to grow a new plant, on which the tomatoes and peppers will grow again. She motivates the children that they can grow their own delicious food better than the one they buy in the store.
Each child puts 1-2 tomato (pepper) seeds in a pot with substrate and lightly waters them (preferably with a spray bottle) every day so that the substrate does not dry out. In about 2 weeks (peppers longer), new plants should start to grow.
They will transplant the grown plants together into larger flowerpots and place them outside in a sunny place. Explain the need for regular watering and fertilizing throughout the growing season. Together they will tie them to stakes and pinch off the first flowers to make the plants stronger.
Children can compete for the richest harvest, and during the holidays, they can take the plant home and take care of it together with their parents. They can take the tomatoes for a snack. Each child should keep their own "book" - draw pictures of how they planted the seed, how the plant grew, and then harvest.
They can do the same with annuals.
The task for the children: bring a box from home and decorate it as best as possible – glue it, paint it, cut it out, attach a handle – and then harvest your tomatoes in it.
